I don't think so, sometimes short handed games can be a lot more aggressive and people cap it 'just for fun'. You might have been behind to maybe one person, but with 3 players, and aggressive action, you probably have implied odds to flop your set. Plus, if the board comes all small cards...

I had never played limit before...

My only experience to this point had been No Limit Tournaments. My wife wanted to go to a boat and play. Kram, I'm with you on this. Limit poker, especially anything us mortals play, you gotta raise. Sure, they'll probably call and you might lose one more bet but what can you do. Put another way, if one of those board cards pair on the river, you are still gonna pay off that full house. So jam it...
